How to start

"Oh my God, what does he mean by that? Why is he so negative? All I want is to be on "Saturday Night Live". If you find yourself shocked and appalled by that headline, just turn off your computer and go finish reading your copy of "People" so you can catch up on Brad and Angelina. The rest that want to be comics keep reading. And if you are one of those P.C. types, just go to hell. A couple of days ago at the Maui Taco open mic a comic used his time to say something interesting. He said everyone there should quit. Stop wasting your time on a hopeless pipe dream. Go finish school, take the postal exam, or just move back down south, go back to raising pigs and enjoy NASCAR. He told us to look around at the faces here. Most of them will be gone in about a year’s time. Well I would have to say in response to his observations he is absolutely correct. Most won't be here in a year. Some people are delusional, some people are talented but can't invest the time, and some just plain don't know what to do. I would imagine it is especially hard for those from out of state. Getting your bearings in the comedy world is tough; now add to it looking for an apartment (to share with ten other strangers) and a job. It can be overwhelming.

So I asked myself what would be helpful to someone new at this? What could I give to some of those I see week after week showing up at the mics and giving it their all to help show the way? The answer is easier said than done. That would be to get advise, to hear from different comics at different places in comedy what they would have liked to have known when they were where you are today that could have helped them immensely. But chances are the only people you are going to meet are fellow comics who are pretty much in the same boat.

So I took it upon myself to create here a series of video interviews from various comics. I just asked them to answer this one basic question: "What is it you know now that you would have liked to have known when you started?" I think you will find this useful!
